I was inspired by a number of evocative &#8220;imagine what it would have been like&#8221;-type sermons I heard earlier this year, and also (as usual) by the work of Will Eisner, who so often depicted, with religious reverence,\u00a0noble individuals enduring the many minor discomforts and petty\u00a0indignities\u00a0of urban America.<\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_1835\" data-imgid=\"1838\" href=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseyMariaWeb.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1838\" src=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseyMariaWeb.jpg\" alt=\"JoseyMariaWeb\" width=\"840\" height=\"1189\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseyMariaWeb.jpg 840w, http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseyMariaWeb-211x300.jpg 211w, http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseyMariaWeb-723x1024.jpg 723w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The main goal of this illustration was to pack as many clever biblical references into the scene as possible. I won&#8217;t list every one (there are at least a dozen), but a few that I&#8217;m proudest of are: the verse from the prophet Ezekiel in the graffiti on the phone kiosk, the way the &#8220;Save More!&#8221; behind Mary&#8217;s head looks kinda like &#8220;Ave Maria!,&#8221;\u00a0and the two ads for &#8220;Glad&#8221; and &#8220;Tide&#8221; on the newspaper (get it?).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the initial rough layout sketch.<\/p>\n<p><a data-postid=\"fsg_post_1835\" data-imgid=\"1839\" href=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseMariaSketch.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1839\" src=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseMariaSketch.jpg\" alt=\"JoseMariaSketch\" width=\"690\" height=\"1030\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseMariaSketch.jpg 690w, http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseMariaSketch-200x300.jpg 200w, http:\/\/www.everettpatterson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/JoseMariaSketch-685x1024.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A word on perspective: for this image, I chose very, very wide vanishing points. The result is what I occasionally call &#8220;middle-class white people perspective.&#8221; Rather than feeling immersed in the scene,\u00a0the viewer is looking at it as if from across the street or from the warmth and safety of his or her passing car. I have a small hope that this Christmas\u00a0image will come to mind when we see other &#8220;down and out&#8221; people huddling outside of gas stations, reminding us that our Savior&#8217;s parents (and indeed, Jesus himself) were at one time similarly troubled.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This was our Christmas card for 2014, depicting Jesus&#8217;s parents in a modern setting.
